Do you really need a new system?

Although my passion is designing new landscape lighting systems, lately I find myself doing some fixing and repairing.

Here is what I am finding:

  • Improper connectors (not waterproof) - electrical tape is not a waterproof connection.
  • Corrosion in the wiring - the wire is no longer copper colored and flexible (it's black and crispy).
  • Tricky wiring - system has been pieced together (you know, someone accidentally cuts it and reconnects it...to the wrong wire)
  • Bad sockets - will no longer hold the bulb in place
  • All "25" fixtures on the same line (wired in a row - answers the question, "why is the first one bright and the last one is so dim.")
  • Old 12v (only) transformers (no breaker or safety features)

I could go on for days but I will not. My point is this: if you recognize one or all of these issues in your current system, don't expect a miracle. If I recommend a new system, you should probably go with my recommendation (even if you don't hire me for the job).

Although I will likely be able to get your existing system up and running, it is only a temporary fix. You will be calling again for further repairs - your system is already failing. I can get you up and running and you can call again next week and I'll find something else and you'll call me again in another week.

Or, we can just do it right the first time. I realize a new system can be costly but when you add up all the cost of repair after repair, it will be worth it in the long run. The new fixtures and transformers have lifetime warranties and you get an entire year of complimentary maintenance should you need it.

Suggestion: Have the work done in sections. Maybe you get new fixtures in the front yard and save up for the back; whatever is most important to you.

If you don't have the problems listed above, chances are your system just needs a tune-up and I'll let you know that. Heck, I've been called out to design new systems and let the homeowner know all they needed where new light bulbs.
